Sketch of the Week: Takemaru in Samurai Armor

I just realized I forgot to post my sketch of the week last week!

This is one of my original characters from my Ronin Yoshino manga series. This is the Daimyo (samurai warlord) – Takemaru, Arashi. He is wearing traditional ancient Japanese O-yoroi armor (from the late Heian to mid-Kamakura period). Arashi is the main antagonist from Ronin Yoshino.

He is sitting on a seat with animal fur & his personal standard (the flag) behind of his clans symbol (the bamboo). The waves show he’s ready for battle. I was inspired by Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s illustration of the samurai – Oda Nobutaka. Photo shows comparrison. I changed several aspects of Takemaru’s armor.

Here is the finished, colour version!
